Description

This vintage Art Deco Chinese area rug from the early 20th century presents a timeless and tranquil composition of refined simplicity. A soft tan field of warm, earthy beauty is framed by a deep navy blue border of quiet authority, while at the center a delicate floral medallion anchors the composition with understated elegance, and elegant flower vase motifs grace each corner.

The flower vase — one of the most beloved motifs in Chinese decorative art — symbolizes peace, beauty, and the flourishing of the home. The combination of the central medallion and corner vases creates a composition of perfect balance and four-fold symmetry rooted in the ancient Chinese belief in the harmony of the four cardinal directions. Chinese Art Deco rugs, produced primarily in the 1920s and 1930s for the Western export market, represent one of the most distinctive fusions of Eastern and Western aesthetic sensibilities in the history of textile art. Drawing on the clean lines, bold geometry, and refined simplicity of the Western Art Deco movement while incorporating the ancient symbolic vocabulary of Chinese art — dragons, cranes, pagodas, lotus flowers, and auspicious emblems — these rugs created a design language entirely their own that continues to be admired and collected worldwide.
