Description

A graceful 19th century Chinese Art Deco rug in a near-square room-size format, featuring a deep navy blue field of lustrous, vibrant wool that gives the piece an immediate presence and visual authority. The elegant ivory border frames the composition with a refined floral design in French blue, tan, and soft navy, while the field is adorned with floral medallions, butterflies, and scattered blossoms in a poetic balance of symmetry and natural beauty.

The butterfly is one of the most beloved symbols in Chinese art — representing transformation, joy, and the beauty of the natural world — and its appearance throughout the field gives this rug a gentle, celebratory spirit that belies the depth and sophistication of its construction. Although the rug displays areas of wear consistent with its age, it retains its timeless charm and character. Chinese Art Deco rugs, produced primarily in the 1920s and 1930s for the Western export market, represent one of the most distinctive fusions of Eastern and Western aesthetic sensibilities in the history of textile art. Drawing on the clean lines, bold geometry, and refined simplicity of the Western Art Deco movement while incorporating the ancient symbolic vocabulary of Chinese art — dragons, cranes, pagodas, lotus flowers, and auspicious emblems — these rugs created a design language entirely their own that continues to be admired and collected worldwide.
