Description

This vintage Chinese Peking rug from the late 19th century features a beautifully soft ivory field of great purity and luminosity, showcasing traditional Chinese floral bouquets and a graceful central medallion in a delicate floral motif of refined naturalism. Framed by a striking border in navy and French blue, the rug offers a harmonious blend of color and pattern that achieves the balance of fullness and restraint that the greatest Peking weavers pursued.

The design is both serene and sophisticated — evoking a sense of calm reminiscent of the classical Chinese water garden, where every element has been placed with the intention of producing not visual excitement but visual peace. Chinese Peking rugs, woven in the workshops of Beijing and the surrounding region from the late 19th century onward, occupy a unique place in the world of antique carpets — distinguished by their open, meditative designs, their luminous palette of soft naturalistic colors, and a design vocabulary drawn from the deep wells of Chinese art, philosophy, and symbolism. Where Persian rugs fill every inch with pattern, the great Peking rugs embrace emptiness as a design element, drawing on the Taoist aesthetic of stillness and the garden traditions of classical Chinese civilization.
