Description

This near-square oversized vintage Turkish Oushak rug from the early 20th century is a remarkable piece of Anatolian weaving artistry — woven in soft pale camel hair tones of extraordinary warmth and subtlety, the color of sun-bleached sand in the high Anatolian plateau. The rug features an all-over geometric pattern centered around a delicate medallion, the muted field creating a dreamlike, meditative quality of great power and refinement.

Hints of lavender and other softly faded vegetable-dye hues lend a painterly, ethereal quality to the surface — as if the rug has absorbed more than a century of light and transformed it into color. A light yellow border adorned with minimalist tribal-inspired geometric motifs frames the whole with quiet authority. At nearly 15 by 17 feet, this is a palace-scale acquisition. Oushak rugs, woven in the city of Uşak in western Turkey, occupy a singular position in the world of antique carpets. Distinguished by their large-scale geometric medallions, their luminous palette of soft golds, ivory, and terracotta, and the extraordinary quality of their long-staple Anatolian wool, Oushak rugs have been prized by European collectors since the Renaissance — appearing in the paintings of Holbein, Lotto, and Memling as symbols of wealth and refinement. Today, authentic antique Oushak rugs are among the most sought-after pieces in the interior design world, prized for their ability to bring warmth, elegance, and a timeless quality to both traditional and contemporary spaces.
