Description

A beautiful vintage Persian Sarouk rug from the first quarter of the 20th century, finely handwoven with exceptional detail and color harmony. The rug features a floral design set on a rich red field — the classic Sarouk foundation — accented by blossoms and leaves in shades of green, blue, yellow, and pink that fill the composition with the garden-like abundance that characterizes the finest early Sarouk production.

Most distinctive is the treatment of the corner spandrels, rendered in a rare and striking turquoise blue — a color seldom found in Sarouk weavings and highly sought after by collectors for its unusual beauty. The classic navy border elegantly frames the composition, while the turquoise spandrels give the whole piece an unexpected freshness and visual originality. The Sarouk rug tradition, originating in the village of Sarouk near Arak in Western Persia, represents one of the most celebrated and widely collected categories of 20th century Persian carpet. Sarouk rugs are distinguished by their lush, heavy wool pile, their allover floral bouquet designs, and a richness of color — particularly the deep, saturated reds and navy blues — that has made them among the most recognizable and sought-after Persian rugs in the American and European collector markets since the early 20th century.
