Description

An extraordinary early 20th century Persian Tabriz rug, room-sized and masterfully hand-knotted in a rare and striking floral design of great sophistication. Distinguished by its unique and warm caramel — wheat-toned — field with elegant scrolling floral motifs that create rhythm and movement across the surface, this piece occupies a genuinely unusual place in the Tabriz design spectrum.

The corner spandrels are rendered in a refined combination of moss green and ivory, while the central medallion in soft cream is delicately detailed with pale green and blush pink accents. The pewter-toned border adds a grounding, almost contemporary edge, beautifully contrasted by a cappuccino background and decorative flourishes in French blue, baby blue, navy, pink, yellow, and red — a palette of remarkable originality and sophistication. Tabriz, the ancient capital of Persian Azerbaijan and one of the great trading cities of the Silk Road, has been a center of carpet weaving for centuries. The city's workshops produce rugs of extraordinary technical precision and design sophistication — ranging from the classical floral medallion compositions of the great 19th century masters to the bold geometric and Mahi patterns for which Tabriz is equally celebrated. Tabriz rugs are among the most recognized and sought-after Persian carpets in the world.
