Description

A beautiful early 20th century silk rug from the ancient weaving city of Herat in Afghanistan — one of the great centers of Persian and Islamic culture for more than a thousand years. Hand-knotted with meticulous craftsmanship, this room-size rug features a captivating allover geometric pattern highlighted by large medallions in rich shades of red, brown, and black set against a luxurious cream-colored silk field of extraordinary luminosity. The contrasting border showcases interconnected pink medallions on a complementary ground, framing the composition with formal elegance.

Herat silk rugs are among the most technically demanding textiles produced in the Afghan weaving world — the fine silk pile requiring both extraordinary skill and patience from the weaver, and producing a surface of jewel-like brilliance and depth that wool-pile rugs cannot approach.
