Caucasian Saddle Blanket 1149

A striking Caucasian Soumak horse saddle blanket or tent decoration from the early 20th century — a functional and ceremonial textile of great beauty and cultural resonance. Woven in the soumak technique — a wrapped flatweave that creates a richly textured, tapestry-like surface of unusual tactile depth — this piece reflects the cultural heritage and extraordinary skill of nomadic weavers of Northwest Persia and the southern Caucasus.

Horse blankets and tent decorations woven in the soumak technique represent some of the finest and most labor-intensive textiles produced by the tribal weavers of this region. The richly saturated colors and intricate geometric patterns reflect the pride and craft these weavers invested in objects that served both practical and ceremonial purposes in nomadic life. Today, displayed as a wall hanging, this piece brings the warmth, character, and old-world charm of authentic tribal textile art to any interior.
