Description

This exceptional Chondsoresk carpet, dating to the mid-19th century, originates from the village of Chondzoresk in the Karabagh region of the Caucasus Mountains — the same village that produced the celebrated Cloudband Kazak rugs for which the Karabagh region is most famous. The field is rendered in a highly desirable abrash green — an uncommon and sought-after color among serious collectors — surrounded by a vibrant tomato red backdrop that hosts an intricate array of geometric motifs. Delicate and bold elements work in harmony throughout the composition.

Chondsoresk carpets of the mid-19th century are extremely rare — the village produced rugs in very small quantities, and the combination of the rare abrash green field, the tomato red surround, and the geometric vocabulary of this specific piece places it in a very narrow category of exceptional Caucasian tribal weaving. A genuine collector's piece of significant historical and artistic importance.
