Description

This beautiful vintage Moroccan rug from the second quarter of the 20th century carries a palette that evokes the blazing colors of an Arizona or New Mexico sunset — soft striped bands of green, purple, yellow, brown, blue, and other luminous tones flowing across the surface in a composition that bears a striking visual kinship with the great Navajo and Southwestern rugs of the American West.

The cross-cultural resonance between Moroccan Berber and Native American Southwestern weaving — two traditions that developed independently on opposite sides of the world — is one of the most fascinating subjects in the study of world textiles, and this piece illustrates it with particular clarity. Its gallery-size proportions make it ideal for long corridors, dining rooms, and mountain cabin interiors where the warmth of authentic handwoven textiles is desired. Moroccan Berber rugs carry one of the oldest and most culturally rich textile traditions in the world — woven by the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) people of the Atlas Mountains and surrounding regions for centuries, primarily by women who encoded the symbols, stories, and spiritual beliefs of their communities into every composition. Each rug is a unique expression of its maker's individual artistic voice within a tradition of remarkable depth and variety.
