Description

This vintage Persian Qum area rug, hand-knotted in the second quarter of the 20th century, is a distinguished example of refined Persian craftsmanship at its most luxurious. Featuring a uniquely elegant oval-shaped central medallion in brilliant red set against a soft ivory field, the design offers a balanced visual contrast of remarkable sophistication. The indigo border is richly decorated with intricate palmettes and gracefully meandering vine motifs, framing the central field with classical elegance.

What makes this piece especially notable is its construction — woven with a fine wool pile on a silk foundation and accented with silk highlights throughout. The silk foundation, rarer and more costly than cotton, gives the rug an exceptional suppleness, softness, and sheen that sets it apart from standard wool-on-cotton Qum examples. The city of Qum is celebrated worldwide for producing some of the most technically accomplished carpets in Persian history, and this wool-on-silk example represents the tradition at its most refined and luxurious.
