Woven in Peru at the midpoint of the 20th century, this oversized South American kilim is a celebration of color, craft, and the enduring vitality of Andean textile tradition. Brilliant stripes in blue, red, green, black, orange, and magenta cascade across the surface in bold banded formation, each color hand-dyed with natural vegetable dyes and woven into an exceptionally fine wool that speaks to the weaver's skill and pride in materials. In the tradition of larger South American kilims, this piece was assembled from two separately woven panels, a construction method that allowed the horizontal loom-weavers of the region to achieve room-filling dimensions. The result is a rug of remarkable scale and energy, ideal for large living spaces, dining rooms, and gallery corridors.
