Description

This exceptional 19th century Persian Bidjar room-size rug is a tour de force of the Kurdish weaving tradition — a piece in which every element of the composition, from the richly abrash red field to the extraordinary primary border, reveals the extraordinary technical mastery of the Bidjar weavers. The open field, highlighted by elegantly rendered Herati-patterned corner spandrels in French blue, pink, cream, yellow, and brown, is anchored by a striking navy central medallion framed by a jagged-edge motif in French blue and golden yellow.

The primary border is among the most beautiful of its kind — abrash French blue and baby blue grounds adorned with intricate geometric motifs in soft pink, green, blue, red, and brown, creating a frame of extraordinary richness and complexity. Secondary cream-toned borders carry finely detailed designs in abrash green that bring the whole composition together with quiet refinement. Woven by Kurdish artisans using the legendary compressed-weave technique that earned Bidjars the title 'Iron Rugs of Persia,' this 19th century example is a collecting opportunity of the highest order.
