Description

This antique Caucasian Kazak area rug from the village of Bordjalou in the south-central Caucasus, dating to the late 19th century, showcases a distinctive village design of great charm and character. The field is adorned with a delightful array of small geometric medallions set against a rich abrash blue background — the natural tonal variation of the hand-dyed mountain wool creating a field of unusual depth and visual movement.

The striking star motif border, rendered in a harmonious palette of cream, green, brown, and rust, adds a vibrant yet grounded contrast to the piece, framing the central field with the confident geometric vocabulary that defines the best Bordjalou Kazak production. The Bordjalou district produced a distinctive regional variant of the Kazak tradition, known for its particular combination of small-format medallion designs and bold border work. Kazak rugs, woven by village artisans in the mountainous region of the South Caucasus — encompassing present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia — are among the most boldly designed and vibrantly colored tribal rugs in the world. Their large-format geometric medallions, brilliant vegetable-dyed palette, and the thick, lustrous pile made from high-altitude mountain wool have made them enduringly sought after by collectors and interior designers who prize authenticity, energy, and the beauty of genuine handcraft.
