Description

A truly rare and beautiful Art Deco Chinese area rug from the early 1900s in an unusual oval shape — a format always made to special commission and extraordinarily difficult to find in the antique market today. The soft green background is framed by a warm tan border, creating a graceful and unique silhouette that brings an organic softness to the Art Deco geometric sensibility.

Adorned with elegant floral and decorative motifs in shades of pink and yellow, the rug blends the ancient Chinese love of natural symbolism with the bold simplicity of the Art Deco era in a composition of unusual harmony and charm. The oval format makes it ideal for entrance halls, beneath round tables, and in any space where the standard rectangular rug would feel too rigid. Chinese Art Deco rugs, produced primarily in the 1920s and 1930s for the Western export market, represent one of the most distinctive fusions of Eastern and Western aesthetic sensibilities in the history of textile art. Drawing on the clean lines, bold geometry, and refined simplicity of the Western Art Deco movement while incorporating the ancient symbolic vocabulary of Chinese art — dragons, cranes, pagodas, lotus flowers, and auspicious emblems — these rugs created a design language entirely their own that continues to be admired and collected worldwide.
