Description

This authentic 19th century Karabagh area rug from the historic Caucasian weaving region of Armenia showcases a striking large-format geometric design set against a refined ivory field — a color choice of unusual delicacy within the Karabagh tradition, which more typically favors deep reds and blacks. The richly toned red border, adorned with intricate geometric motifs, provides a bold frame that enhances the visual harmony of the ivory field.

The rug displays a beautifully aged patina indicative of its genuine antique character — the natural result of more than a century and a quarter of existence in which its vegetable dyes have mellowed into the complex, nuanced tones that only genuine antique textiles achieve. Structurally sound and visually captivating, it represents the Karabagh tradition in an unusually quiet and refined key. The Karabagh region of the southern Caucasus — a mountainous territory of extraordinary cultural richness shared between Armenia and Azerbaijan — produced some of the most vibrantly colored and boldly designed rugs and kilims in the Caucasian weaving tradition. Karabagh weavers were renowned above all for their use of intense, saturated natural dye colors, their exuberant floral compositions — often compared to French Impressionist paintings — and the sheer visual energy that defines the finest pieces from this celebrated region.
