Description

This beautiful Kazak rug, woven in the South Caucasus in the fourth quarter of the 19th century, stands out for its exceptional color palette and bold tribal design. Most notably, it features an extraordinary green border — one of the most uncommon and highly prized hues in antique Kazak rugs — framing a richly colored central field adorned with striking geometric motifs in vivid tones of pink, blue, yellow, and red.

Two narrow ivory borders enhance the composition's structure and rhythm, providing visual breathing room between the energetic field and the bold green frame. The green border Kazak is among the most sought-after variants in the entire Caucasian collecting world — its rarity a function of the difficulty of achieving a saturated, stable green from natural dye sources. This example, with its full geometric vocabulary and vibrant natural dye palette, is a serious collector's piece. Kazak rugs, woven by village artisans in the mountainous region of the South Caucasus — encompassing present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia — are among the most boldly designed and vibrantly colored tribal rugs in the world. Their large-format geometric medallions, brilliant vegetable-dyed palette, and the thick, lustrous pile made from high-altitude mountain wool have made them enduringly sought after by collectors and interior designers who prize authenticity, energy, and the beauty of genuine handcraft.
