A striking decorative pillow made from an antique Caucasian kilim woven in the fourth quarter of the 19th century in the southern region of the Caucasus mountains — a piece that carries over a century of history in its richly colored, finely woven surface. Caucasian kilims of this period are among the most collectible of all antique flatweaves, prized for the intensity of their natural dye palette and the bold geometric vocabulary of their tribal designs.
The kilim textile, which has retained its beautiful design and colors remarkably well for its age, covers one face of the pillow with a woven textile fabric on the reverse. Repurposing antique kilim fragments in this way is both a form of preservation and a sustainable practice, giving a 19th century work of art a new role in the contemporary home.
