Description

This early 20th century tribal bagface from Northwest Persia was handwoven as the decorated face of a small nomadic bag — likely a salt or spice bag — with a care and artistry that reflects the deep weaving culture of the Persian tribal world, where even the most functional objects were worthy of the weaver's full creative attention.

At 18 inches square, this bagface is slightly larger than its companion pieces, giving it more visual presence as a wall display piece, table centerpiece, or pillow face. The bold geometric design and warm natural dye palette are characteristic of the Northwest Persian tribal tradition — pieces woven not for trade but for use within the household, and carrying the spontaneous energy and authentic character that make tribal bagfaces among the most personally expressive textiles in the Persian art world. Tribal bags, bagfaces, and saddlebags represent some of the most intimate and personal textile objects ever made by the nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of Persia, the Caucasus, and Central Asia. Created for daily functional use — carrying salt, spices, grain, tools, and household goods during seasonal migrations — these small weavings were nonetheless executed with extraordinary care and artistry. Today, freed from their original purpose, they are treasured as works of art: wall-mounted, displayed on tables, or repurposed as pillows — miniature windows into the weaving traditions of the tribal world.
