One of the most unusual and historically resonant of all Persian flatweave forms, the Jajim kilim is the product of the horizontal loom — the tool of the nomad. Unlike the fixed vertical looms of settled weavers, the horizontal loom could be disassembled and carried, making it the only practical option for tribes and clans that moved seasonally between summer pastures and winter quarters. This vintage Persian Jajim from the second quarter of the 20th century was assembled from five individually woven strips, each produced on a horizontal loom and then expertly sewn together — a construction method that is itself a testament to the ingenuity and artistry of people who created beauty under demanding conditions. The result is a richly colored, room-size kilim in blue, green, red, orange, brown, gray, yellow, and purple that brings warmth, history, and nomadic spirit to any interior.
