Description

A striking early 20th century antique Persian Kashan area rug of great technical refinement and classical beauty, hand-knotted in the renowned weaving city of Kashan with the luminous wool and meticulous craftsmanship for which this tradition is celebrated worldwide. The rich dark red field is gracefully adorned with a central medallion in navy blue and ivory — a classic and deeply satisfying color pairing — framed by the dense floral pattern that radiates from the medallion across the field with the confident rhythm of a living garden.

The deep navy border, highlighted by intricate floral designs in red, green, sky blue, and ivory, frames the composition with a contrast that enhances the visual depth and formal completeness of the design. This early 20th century Kashan represents the tradition at one of its finest historical moments — after the remarkable late 19th century revival and before the gradual commercial pressures that would eventually soften the standards of later decades. Kashan rugs, woven in the ancient city of Kashan in the Isfahan province of central Persia, represent one of the great pinnacles of Persian carpet weaving. Kashan was one of the first Persian cities to revive the art of fine carpet weaving in the late 19th century, after a long period of decline, and the rugs produced there — particularly the finest wool and silk examples from the early 20th century — are among the most universally admired in the entire Persian canon. Kashan rugs are distinguished by their extraordinarily fine weave, the luminous quality of their specially selected Merino and Manchester wools, and a design vocabulary of classical medallion and floral forms executed with a precision and elegance that has made them the benchmark of Persian rug quality worldwide.
