Description

This antique Caucasian Kazak rug from the late 19th century features a bold and balanced triple medallion design set against a beautifully abrash-dyed blue field — one of the most classic and compelling design formats in the entire Kazak tradition. Handwoven with skill and tribal authenticity, the composition is framed by an ivory-toned primary border adorned with colorful geometric motifs in yellow, green, pink, and red.

The gracefully aged patina of this piece — the natural result of more than a century of use and the beautiful mellowing of its vegetable dyes — gives it the authentic 'shabby chic' character that only genuine antique textiles achieve. Whether used as an area rug or a wide corridor runner, its versatile proportions and timeless Kazak palette make it equally at home in classic and contemporary interiors. Kazak rugs, woven by village artisans in the mountainous region of the South Caucasus — encompassing present-day Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia — are among the most boldly designed and vibrantly colored tribal rugs in the world. Their large-format geometric medallions, brilliant vegetable-dyed palette, and the thick, lustrous pile made from high-altitude mountain wool have made them enduringly sought after by collectors and interior designers who prize authenticity, energy, and the beauty of genuine handcraft.
