Description

An exceptional vintage Persian Tabriz area rug from the second quarter of the 20th century, featuring an allover Tree of Life design — one of the most enduring and symbolically resonant motifs in Persian art and weaving. The rhythmic cypress tree motif, repeated across the surface with the cadence of a sacred garden, beautifully illustrates the intersection of cultural meaning and artistic mastery that has defined the Persian rug tradition for centuries.

Set in a vibrant magenta field, the repeated cypress trees appear in shades of avocado green and pale olive, gracefully connected by cream-colored branches adorned with blossoms and leaves in carnation pink, cerulean blue, soft yellow, gray, and red. The soft pale yellow spandrels and border echo the field's vibrancy with complementary floral detailing. In Persian culture, the cypress tree symbolizes eternal life, strength, and the connection between earth and heaven — qualities embodied in this striking and deeply meaningful rug. Tabriz, the ancient capital of Persian Azerbaijan and one of the great trading cities of the Silk Road, has been a center of carpet weaving for centuries. The city's workshops produce rugs of extraordinary technical precision and design sophistication — ranging from the classical floral medallion compositions of the great 19th century masters to the bold geometric and Mahi patterns for which Tabriz is equally celebrated. Tabriz rugs are among the most recognized and sought-after Persian carpets in the world.
