Description

A beautiful room-size vintage Persian Tabriz rug in the celebrated Herati Mahi — or 'fish' — design, one of the most iconic and enduring patterns in the entire Persian rug tradition. The dark blue field carries the intricate Herati design in green, blue, cream, and red, anchored by a central medallion in rich red and cream tones. The corner designs in blue and cream, with brilliant green accents, add to the visual harmony and depth of the composition, while the border design in blue, white, and pink set on a bright red background frames the whole with vivid authority.

The Mahi (fish) pattern takes its name from the small fish-like forms that appear within the stylized rosettes of the Herati design — a detail visible only on close inspection but contributing to the overall sense of organic life and movement that makes this pattern so enduringly beloved. Tabriz, the ancient capital of Persian Azerbaijan and one of the great trading cities of the Silk Road, has been a center of carpet weaving for centuries. The city's workshops produce rugs of extraordinary technical precision and design sophistication — ranging from the classical floral medallion compositions of the great 19th century masters to the bold geometric and Mahi patterns for which Tabriz is equally celebrated. Tabriz rugs are among the most recognized and sought-after Persian carpets in the world.
