This magnificent antique Turkish kilim from the first quarter of the 20th century is one of the finest examples of early Anatolian village flatweave in the gallery's collection. Five large rectangular medallions march in a column down the center of the field, each rendered in a different color and design arrangement — a compositional device that gives the rug a processional grandeur well suited to its gallery or corridor proportions. The field glows in pale brick red, softened by the natural abrash of hand-dyed wool, and the entire composition is framed by a refined cream-color border. For collectors of antique Turkish textiles, a room-size kilim of this age and quality is a rare and significant find.
