Description

This vintage Persian Karajeh area rug from the first quarter of the 20th century features the classic Karajeh layout of three geometric medallions arranged along a deep navy blue field. The medallions are rendered in soft abrash blues and pinks, creating a beautifully weathered, time-worn aesthetic of subtle expressiveness. A rust-red border surrounds the field, decorated with charming tribal motifs that highlight the artisan's attention to detail. The softened palette of pale blue, green, pink, and rust red, and the naturally aged character give this rug a timeless appeal.

The Karajeh village north of Tabriz produced rugs distinguished by their characteristic three-medallion column format and a palette that often features sought-after green and abrash color combinations. Heriz rugs, woven in the village of Heriz and surrounding towns of the Azerbaijan region in Northwest Persia, are among the most recognized and beloved antique Persian carpets in the world. Distinguished by their bold geometric medallions, their warm brick-red and ivory palettes, and the exceptional durability of their double-wefted construction, Heriz rugs have furnished the grand rooms of Europe and America since the late 19th century. The finest early examples — particularly those designated Serapi, woven in the 19th century villages north of Heriz — are among the most actively collected antique rugs in the world today.
