Description

This exceptional vintage Persian Malayer area rug from the early 1900s is a piece of unusual character and artistic originality — its striking central medallion in a rare combination of navy blue, turquoise, and terracotta framing stylized human and animal motifs that add depth, narrative, and a distinctly personal expressiveness to the composition.

Figural motifs — human and animal forms woven into the design — are among the rarest and most prized elements in Persian village rug collecting, reflecting the weaver's departure from the purely geometric or floral vocabulary of mainstream production and their willingness to bring the figures of everyday pastoral life into the textile itself. With a full pile and excellent condition, this rug serves beautifully as both a statement floor covering and a unique work of wall art. The Malayer district of Western Persia — located in the Hamadan province, east of the Zagros Mountains — produced village rugs of remarkable quality and diversity throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Malayer rugs are distinguished by their fine weave, their inventive use of design formats drawn from both the Hamadan and Sarouk traditions, and a palette of naturally dyed wool whose depth and complexity reward close study. The finest Malayer rugs, particularly those in the camel hair field and Herati allover formats, are among the most sought-after village rugs of Western Persia.
