Description

This vintage Persian Malayer area rug from the second quarter of the 20th century features the classic Herati geometric design in a deep navy-blue field of great richness, framed by an ivory border of crisp contrast. A striking red medallion anchors the center with confident authority, complemented by accents in French blue, pink, and brown within the medallion and spandrels that give the composition a layered visual depth.

The rug's naturally distressed, 'shabby chic' character — the result of decades of gentle use and the beautiful mellowing of its natural dyes — enhances rather than diminishes its appeal, giving it the lived-in warmth and patina that only genuine antique textiles achieve. Both beautiful and highly functional, it is an ideal piece for interiors that value authentic Persian craftsmanship with timeless appeal. The Malayer district of Western Persia — located in the Hamadan province, east of the Zagros Mountains — produced village rugs of remarkable quality and diversity throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. Malayer rugs are distinguished by their fine weave, their inventive use of design formats drawn from both the Hamadan and Sarouk traditions, and a palette of naturally dyed wool whose depth and complexity reward close study. The finest Malayer rugs, particularly those in the camel hair field and Herati allover formats, are among the most sought-after village rugs of Western Persia.
