Vintage Persian Qashqai (Ghashghai) Tribal Area Rug, hand-knotted in Southwestern Persia circa the mid-1900s. The Qashqai nomadic tribes are celebrated for their distinctive weaving traditions, producing rugs that are as rich in cultural narrative as they are in beauty and durability.
This Qashqai rug showcases a classic traditional tribal design format, centered around a prominent single large medallion that anchors the composition. This central motif is beautifully complemented by four smaller medallions thoughtfully placed within the corner spandrels, creating a harmonious and balanced layout.
The vibrant red field color provides a warm and inviting backdrop for the design. The central medallion stands out in a deep dark blue, while the corner spandrels feature a contrasting small medallion in creamy ivory. The palette is further enriched with accents of bold blue, refreshing green, and spirited orange, characteristic of tribal weaves. True to their heritage, Qashqai tribes primarily utilize natural vegetable dyes for their rich hues, with the exception of the vibrant orange color, which often signals a charming, subtle deviation common in mid-century tribal pieces. Woven entirely from all-wool material, this rug offers a soft yet incredibly durable texture, designed to withstand generations of use.
