Description

A beautiful antique Persian Lilian Sarouk rug from the early 1900s, handwoven in the renowned weaving region of Western Persia in one of the most graceful and refined sub-traditions of the broader Sarouk family. The Lilian Sarouk is distinguished from its more densely patterned counterparts by its open, airy field composition — the deep red ground providing a warm foundation for the delicate French blue floral accents that float across the surface with elegant restraint.

A navy blue border of quiet authority frames the composition. The Lilian village, in the Arak district of Western Persia, produced rugs of exceptional refinement that balance the lush wool pile and warm palette of the Sarouk tradition with a lightness of design that makes them particularly versatile and enduringly desirable. The Sarouk rug tradition, originating in the village of Sarouk near Arak in Western Persia, represents one of the most celebrated and widely collected categories of 20th century Persian carpet. Sarouk rugs are distinguished by their lush, heavy wool pile, their allover floral bouquet designs, and a richness of color — particularly the deep, saturated reds and navy blues — that has made them among the most recognizable and sought-after Persian rugs in the American and European collector markets since the early 20th century.
