Welcome to The Persian Knot
A Curated Collection of Authentic 19th and early 20th-Century Fine Handwoven Rugs, Tapestries and Textiles From Around the World
11" x 24" x 1" A vintage Baluch tribal salt bag with geometric pattern in green, red, ivory and brown colors from the early 1900s. The salt bag has a small Baluch piled rug woven for the front and the back of the bag which is very unusual since most salt bags have a flat woven kilim for the backing. The weaver has taken pride in creating a functional piece that is also very beautiful.
For the tribal people salt has always been one of the most important and precious spices for preserving food and also food flavoring. During human history salt has been considered valuable as a form of money and payment. For the caravans that travel in the desert, salt becomes a life saving spice. The salt bags were woven to be used as functional pieces for protecting and transporting material and goods between their various grazing and composites. Because of the rarity, these items have become very collectible and more often used as decorative arts.
