Beautiful early 20th century Caucasian Kazak "Sevan" area rug. Renowned for their bold geometric designs and robust construction, Kazak rugs are highly prized, and this unusually large example of the iconic "Sevan" pattern is a particularly impressive find.
This captivating Kazak features the distinctive "Sevan" pattern, characterized by its prominent central medallion, dramatically set against a rich dark red color field. The large medallion design itself is a masterpiece of geometric form, rendered in commanding shades of purple, deep dark red, and luminous ivory. Complementing these primary hues, intricate geometric design elements throughout the field and medallion pop with vibrant blue, sunny yellow, and verdant green accents.
The rug is elegantly framed by an ivory background border, which beautifully contrasts the field and is adorned with its own dynamic designs in harmonious shades of blue, red, yellow, and green.
A remarkable feature of this rug is the exquisite demonstration of abrash, the subtle and gradual changes in color tones that occur naturally with the use of vegetable dyes. In this particular piece, one can beautifully observe three different shades of the same color subtly transitioning, adding profound depth, authenticity, and a unique patina that only enhances its antique charm.
